Sweet Pea, a black and white elderly cat, sits on a stack of papers on a desk in an office.

Sweet Pea’s Sweet Goodbye

Sweet Pea came to us from a shelter in Socorro. This petite, 15-year-old girl had been surrendered by her previous owners when they couldn’t care for her because of health problems. While at the shelter, Sweet Pea had experienced a respiratory infection and GI problems, and no one was interested in adopting her.

When she arrived at June’s, she almost immediately took to our Executive Director, Janet. Sweet Pea loved sitting Janet’s office, often perching on the desk right next to Janet while she worked.

A few days after Sweet Pea joined us, we learned that she had heart failure and only had a short time left with us. She passed peacefully one week after she came to June’s.

Being with our seniors during their final days is at the heart of what we do. It’s one of the most difficult—and most meaningful—parts of our mission. Our Golden Paws Care program provides hospice and palliative care to the many resident senior cats at Hannah’s House, and it’s an emotional burden we gladly take on. We take comfort in knowing that Sweet Pea had found her place—right on Janet’s desk—and wasn’t in a cage alone when she left this world. Instead, she was surrounded by love after spending her final days with comfort and love.
