We first learned about Lance—a gentle, loving black cat—when a caring neighbor reached out, worried about his severely infected eyes. Lance’s caregiver was struggling, and despite the best intentions, he wasn’t able to give Lance the care he desperately needed. Though we didn’t have space at Hannah’s House at the time, we acted immediately through our Help Meowt program to get Lance medical care. He received an antibiotic injection and eye drops, and we placed him on our waitlist until a room opened up.
But soon the situation grew urgent.
The concerned friend contacted us again—Lance’s caregiver hadn’t been able to keep up with the treatment plan, and Lance’s eyes were worsening rapidly. He was in pain. He was declining. And he had no one who could provide the consistent care he needed to heal. We knew then that waiting was no longer an option.
While we firmly believe in helping cats stay with the people who love them, sometimes an owner’s illness or crisis makes that impossible. Senior cats in these situations often have nowhere to go. Many end up in shelters unequipped for their medical needs—or worse, they simply suffer in silence.
We couldn’t let that happen to Lance.
Once he arrived at June’s, everything changed. With proper treatment, his eyes began to heal quickly. At his first vet visit, the plan was to remove at least one eye, but after weeks of steady care, the vet now believes that the eye can be saved. Lance is settling in beautifully, feeling safer and more comfortable every day. And most importantly, he is finally out of pain.
His purrs tell us everything we need to know: Lance is relieved, healing, and hopeful again. And we’re hopeful, too—we think Lance would be perfect for our Senior Cats for Senior Laps program. Even though sweet Lance is a big boy (16 lbs.), he is a gentle giant and would make a loving companion for a senior citizen.
