Our Youngest Cat: Mabel

Today, we celebrate our youngest cat, Mabel, who holds a special place in our hearts. Mabel, a tiny brown tabby, was found at about 7 weeks old on the side of a busy road after she was thrown from a car. After little Mabel arrived at the Sandoval County Animal Shelter with a swollen head, she soon began having seizures.

While health problems usually mark animals at shelters for euthanasia, a kind cat lover, Lindsay, stepped forward to foster Mabel. After some time, life circumstances prevented Lindsay from continuing to foster Mabel, and we learned that Mabel needed permanent rescue to take care of her.

Despite being a senior rescue, we decided this special kitten with such a tough start needed safety and a home. Some time after Mabel arrived, we got a call to foster Mabel. Lindsay’s life circumstances had stabilized, and she had an empty spot in her heart—and home—waiting for Mabel! We were thrilled!

Mabel, now 4 years old, no longer has seizures and is living her best life with her adopted mom.

While June’s is a senior cat rescue, and Mabel was a kitten, she suffered from seizures, which meant she needed medication and regular veterinary care. These factors meant she most likely wouldn’t get adopted from a shelter. June’s provides lifelong care for senior cats, who are often overlooked for adoption, languish in shelters, or are euthanized before their time simply because of their age. We also sometimes rescue cats with chronic health problems, like Mabel.

Mabel may be our youngest, but she represents exactly why June’s exists.

Cats like her — and the seniors we cherish every day — don’t get passed over because they aren’t worthy. They get passed over because they need a little more. A little more medication. A little more monitoring. A little more patience. A little more love.

At June’s, “a little more” is what we do best.
