Legal Advisor Needed

As we look to the future of the organization and our work on behalf of senior cats, June’s is looking for a new board member with a passion for animal welfare who can serve as legal advisor.

Organization Type: 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Cat Rescue

Time Commitment: Approx. 5 hours/month

Location: New Mexico/Remote

Reports to: Board Members / Executive Director

Position Summary

June’s Senior Cat Rescue is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our Board of Directors as a Legal Advisor. This is a volunteer position best suited for an attorney in good standing who is passionate about animal welfare and eager to use their legal expertise to support a growing nonprofit cat rescue.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in  monthly board meetings (virtual or in-person).
  • Provide legal guidance on matters such as:
    • Contracts and agreements
    • Liability and risk management (organization is fully insured)
    • Governance and compliance with 501(c)(3) regulations
    • Employment or volunteer-related legal concerns
  • Review or draft basic legal documents as needed.
  • Advise the board on best practices regarding nonprofit governance and operations.
  • Support the mission and vision of the organization, advocating for ethical and compassionate animal rescue practices.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in New Mexico and in good standing with the state bar.
  • Prior board or nonprofit experience is a plus but not required.
  • Passion for animal welfare and commitment to the organization’s mission.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to volunteer an average of 5 hours per month.
