Board Member – Legal Advisor
Organization Type: 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Cat Rescue
Time Commitment: Approx. 5 hours/month
Location: New Mexico/Remote
Reports to: Board Members / Executive Director
Position Summary
June’s Senior Cat Rescue is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our Board of Directors as a Legal Advisor. This is a volunteer position best suited for an attorney in good standing who is passionate about animal welfare and eager to use their legal expertise to support a growing nonprofit cat rescue.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in monthly board meetings (virtual or in-person).
- Provide legal guidance on matters such as:
- Contracts and agreements
- Liability and risk management (organization is fully insured)
- Governance and compliance with 501(c)(3) regulations
- Employment or volunteer-related legal concerns
- Review or draft basic legal documents as needed.
- Advise the board on best practices regarding nonprofit governance and operations.
- Support the mission and vision of the organization, advocating for ethical and compassionate animal rescue practices.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in New Mexico and in good standing with the state bar.
- Prior board or nonprofit experience is a plus but not required.
- Passion for animal welfare and commitment to the organization’s mission.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Willingness to volunteer an average of 5 hours per month.
