Help Meowt Saved Aku’s Life—Now She’s Back Home Where She Belongs

When Aku’s human came to us for help on a recent Thursday night, she was worried. Aku, a shy but sweet gray tabby, had been experiencing pain—enough pain that she was growling from it.

Aku, affectionately known as Kuku, was a big part of her human’s family and had comforted them during hard times. Aku’s human had rescued her a few years before, but had since lost her job and couldn’t afford a visit to the vet. Still, she didn’t want such an important part of their family to suffer, so she booked an appointment for the following Tuesday and approached June’s Senior Cat Rescue for assistance through our Help Meowt Program.

We learned from her owner that Aku, who was 7 and had not been spayed, wasn’t eating and had discharge, indicating she had a uterine infection. Her symptoms pointed to a serious condition called pyometra that requires immediate treatment to prevent sepsis and even death. Waiting until a Tuesday appointment would be too late. The window of time to get Aku to a vet for life-saving treatment was closing fast.

June’s Senior Cat Rescue sprang into action to with a Help Meowt grant make sure Aku got the treatment she needed to save her life. Aku underwent surgery to be spayed and remove the infection, and received her vaccinations and a microchip, and is now recovering at home with her family, who tell us that it’s clear she feels much better now.

June’s Senior Cat Rescue’s Help Meowt program is here to help cats like Aku and her family, providing financial assistance for senior citizens with cats of any age, or anyone who needs help with a senior cat’s vet bills. The program keeps these cats from being surrendered to a shelter because their humans can’t afford expenses like spay and neuter, vaccines, and other veterinary care. The program pays the vet directly and requires the applicant to cover a small amount of the cost for the care requested.

If you have a beloved senior cat and cannot afford his or her care, apply for the Help Meowt Program by filling out the application here.
